Shooting at 36.7 million frames (yes MILLION) per second, with a shutter speed of 27 picoseconds (that’s 0.000 000 000 001 seconds) a new camera developed by Engineers at UCLA is said to be the world’s fastest and world’s most sensitive photo camera.

A team of Engineers at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), led by Bahram Jalali and Dino Di Carlo, developed this camera that is about 100 times faster than existing optical microscopes. The hope is that this device can be used to drastically improve a doctor’s ability to diagnose early-stage and pre-metastatic cancer by photographing the single cells in the blood stream.

Check out this video for more!

The official name for this camera is “automated flow-through single-particle optical microscope”. Due to it’s massive shooting speed (36.7 million fps, 27 picoseconds shutter speed) traditional CCD and CMOS sensors simply don’t measure up. They take far too long to read the data out of each pixel, and the image turns blurry because there isn’t enough light to produce a sharp image anyways. So instead, this new device uses STEAM imaging — serial time-encoded amplified microscopy — which was also developed by the same UCLA team back in 2009. The STEAM technology fires quick laser pulses which are reflected off cells that flow through a microfluidic device. The image is captured is then amplified and picked up by a very high-speed single-pixel photodetector, and ultimately gets processed by an FPGA.

Our hearty congratulations to the UCLA Jalali Lab engineers for this breakthrough technology that is sure to help millions of cancer patients in the not too distant future.

gdgtsf – What’s The Event Like?

I have attended both the gdgtsf events in the past. The very first one was last November, when I spoke to gdgt co-founder Peter Rojas about the site. The 2nd gdgtsf was in May of this year, where I produced over a dozen videos for my own blog’s video offerings – oObly TV. Unlike the stock markets, where past performance is not a guarantee of future performance, the 2 gdgtsf events in the past have been a whole lot of fun, and I can safely “guarantee” that this event on Thursday should should be no different. With over 1300 RSVPs and $5000 in prizes and giveaways, this one’s gonna be rad!

Here are some of the video highlights from the last gdgtsf event. Use the twitter hashtag #gdgtsf when tweeting before, during and after the event.

The Internets is abuzz with rumors of Facebook working on a new Phone, so we couldn’t resist digging into this for you. Today, our Zuck-stalkers got their hands on a never-before-seen Facebook Phone design, that looks really legitimate considering all the features it boasts, including

Speakerphone is always ON, so you can always share in public.

Privacy Grip housing registers your fingerprints with Facebook Fingerprints Server.

Swab system to unlock. Saliva analysis system upload your DNA and compares it to the Facebook DNA database

Farmville water crop buttons.

Winklevoss proximity alarm.

Take a look yourself.

I doubt anyone -except Mark Zuckerberg – will have any use for the Winklevoss proximity alarm.

The folks at JOT have timed this fake illustration poking fun at Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to come out the same day that CEO Zuckerberg has issued yet another insincere apology for the FTC privacy smackdown that Facebook received.

In an interview with the New York Times, Steve Jobs biographer Walter Issacson spoke about how Jobs wanted to disrupt 3 big industries that affect millions of people around the world every single day.

He had three things that he wanted to reinvent: the television, textbooks and photography. He really wanted to take these on. — One on One: Walter Isaacson, Biographer of Steve Jobs (NYTimes)

It is this 3rd industry – the art and business of photography – that Italian designer Antonio DeRosa has taken on. In what he calls the “iCam“, DeRosa has come up with a series of illustrations that visually describe what an Apple Camera might look like, if they ever ended up inventing one for the iPhone.

Here is how DeRosa has imagined the iPhone Camera would look like.

The iCam Camera as a photo Projector.

Taking photographs with the iCam Camera

The iPhone Socket in the iCam Camera.

Will The iCam Design Work?

While I love DeRosa‘s design concepts and his wild imagination, I think there is a fundamental flaw in this iPhone Camera design. The iPhone camera lenses – all the way upto the latest iPhone 4S – are located in the top left on the back. This concept camera casing shows a camera lens right in the middle.

How will the camera actually take pictures? Where is the connection between the center iCam lens and the iPhone’s built-in lens? It would be hard to expect Apple or iPhone to drastically change it’s phone design to move the iPhone’s lens from the top left – which is located there for a very good reason – to the middle of the phone just so it can fit into a prototype like this.

Nevertheless this iCam design concept is turning a lot of heads in the Internets. It is only a matter of time before some manufacturer somewhere in the world gets in touch with DeRosa to make this concept into reality.

Meanwhile, check out all 44 High-Res iCam concept illustrations on DeRosa’s Studio website here.
