Apple is expected to release a stunning 3D Maps app in the iOS 6 version of it’s mobile operating system for the iPhone and iPad. Mark Gurman over at 9to5Mac reports that several trusted sources given them information about this 3D maps app, complete with screenshots.
Before you dismiss this report as fake, consider this. Between 2009 and 2011, Apple quickly lapped up 3 mapping companies one after another in quick succession:
- Placebase, in 2009;
- Poly9, a 3-D mapping shop in 2010;
- C3 Technologies, another 3-D mapping company in 2011
That makes it 3 mapping-company acquisitions in as many years! Now why would they do something like this unless they are trying to create 3D maps, and accelerate that process by buying up and re-engineering existing 3D apps and services?
Apple is expected to unveil this amazing 3D map powered by it own Apple iOS technology at the Apple WWDC event here in San Francisco next month June 11 – 15 during the keynote speech. This, of course, implies that Apple will dump the existing Google Maps program running on it’s iOS devices – iPhone, iPad – since 2007 in favor of it’s new 3D Maps app powered by it’s own Apple technology. The app design is said to be very similar similar to the existing Google Maps app on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, with the difference being the Apple Maps will be a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience.
