Apple Inc today celebrated the 25 billionth app downloaded from it’s app store by a HUGE Thank you message on it’s 25 billion app downloads contest page as well as on it’s home page. The thank you message reads as follows.
A billion thanks. 25 times over. The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there.
The thank you message was followed by app icon images from various iphone and ipad apps, including the most popular ones like Instagram, Pandora, Angry Birds, Guitar Hero, Twitter, Fruit Ninja, SIMS, Groupon and billions more.
In July 2008, just about a year after the first iPhone was released, Apple’s officially opened the App Store for business. In less than 4 years, the app store now boasts more than 500,000 apps for the iPhone of which about 140,000 are specifically made for the iPad.
Apple had initiated a countdown to the 25 billionth app download just over 2 weeks ago on February 17, 2012 when the number of apps downloaded was hovering around around 24.29 billion.
On the countdown page, that is now replaced with this thank you banner message, apple had announced that the person who performs the 25 billionth app download will receive an gift card from Apple worth $10,000 (USD) that he/she can use towards purchasing more stuff from Apple.
While the 25 billion mark has been crossed, the winner of the countdown to 25 billion app downloads contest is still to be announced. The countdown page asks visitors to “Please come back to this page later to see who won.”.
I guess they want to be double-sure before making the announcement, lest it cause yet another Apple controversy! Stay tuned to oObly.com while we bring you the details about the winner.
