[Note: This works in new tumblr 2011 June onwards!]
When you sign up for a tumblr tumblog at tumblr.com, your blog profile will display an anonymous head in your dashboard and in other tumblogs where you reblog or like other posts.
Obviously this is ugly, so here is how you can change / update your tumblr profile photo.

If you prefer to see and do, here is a screencast video I put together, that shows you how you can change or update your profile portrait photo in the new tumblr via the dashboard.
Tumblr Update / Replace Profile Portrait Photo – Step By Step Instructions
- Logon to your tumblr blog dashboard.
- Click the link with the name of your tumblog right next to the dashboard link in the top menu. See screenshot below (Fig 1).
- This will display a Settings button in the right sidebar.Click this Settings button. (Fig 2)
- Here, you will see the Portrait Photo section with a box and a browse button next to it. Click the browse button and select your favorite profile portrait from your hard drive. Ideally this photo should be square, so that cropping is minimized or completely eliminated.(Fig 3)
- Once you have selected the portrait photo, scroll all the way to the bottom of this Settings page and click the Save Preferences button. (Fig 4)
- That’s it!.
You should now see your profile photo in your regular blog posting tumblr dashboard, and everywhere else on tumblr.com where you are reblogging or liking or socializing with other tumblr bloggers!

The name of my Tumblog isn’t on my dashboard. What do I do?
That is strange. Do you see “Untitled” next to the Dashboard link in the top? If you have not set a name, it will default to “Untitled”.
thats only because u havent changed yours
you have to go to customize then go to info
& where it says ‘title’ thats where u put something like hw he has oobly or w.e.
then u save it then it hould have something there
Click the one that’s called “Posts”.
same for me it just says dashboard and nothing beside it but all those other buttons :/

find it now. At the top you will see where it says “Dashboard” and then beside it there will be your URL. Click on that, and then you will click on the button that says settings, then you should see the option for changing your portrait picture.
Click the “Posts” that is right next to “Dashboard”.

Possibly the dumbest question ever here: What am I doing wrong that I don’t have that sidebar at all (as shown in the screenshot)? Mine shows only people and tags I’m following, and a search box. I’m not generally that stupid with websites, but I’ve played with this for days and cannot get that “settings” option I need in order to add/change a profile photo. Input would be much appreciated! :-)

I can’t seem to find the option to change my profile portrait. In fact, my dashboard page layout does not show the “settings” button, only the icon for “preferences”.
